Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand State, lies at the foothills of Mussoorie, and is famous for its educational institutions, sulphur water springs, ancient temples and aesthetic fresh environment. The city is regarded as Dev Bhumi, also called by various names-Dron Nagri and Doon Valley etc. Dehradun is made up of two words “dehra+doon”-‘dehra ‘ is derived from the word “dera”, meaning home, and “doon” is a term for the valley that lies between the Himalayas and the “shivalika”.
Located of the foothills of the Himalayas, the Doon Valley is situated between two of India’s mightiest river the Ganges on the east and the Yamuna on the West. Dehradun is famous for its picturesque landscapes and pleasant climate and the city provides a gateway to the surrounding region of the Garhwal Himalaya. The City has the famous Forest Research Institute, the only one of its kind in India. Bedsides RIMC, IMA and ONGC, FSI, ZSI, BSI and Survey of India are few pride institutions of the country. It is almost one hour drive to Dehradun from Haridwar, Rishikesh, Mussoorie, Saharanpur and Ponta Sahib.
The valley is well connected by roads, air and rail with other parts of the country. The climate remains pleasant throughout the year. During summers, the thermometer reaches upto 350c-380c and in winters the mercury touches upto 150c-200c with occasional rainfall.
